Whose Driving Your Car?

Whose driving?”  That’s what my mom always wanted to know before I went out with my friends after school.  I didn’t understand it then, but the answer was important.  What does this have to do with losing weight and controlling lifestyle diseases like diabetes and heart disease… well, a lot really.

In my mind, a few human beings were getting into a car and traveling from point A to point B.  It happens a million times a day so why was it such a big deal when I was involved?

What lies beneath: The secret to losing weight without exercise

If you’d just lose 20 pounds you probably wouldn’t even need these medications.”  Those words echo in my mind as I think back to a time when I bought into the idea that everyone who was overweight was lazy and gluttonous.  Just eat a little less, exercise a little more. “Voila!”  The weight would just fall off.  Well, if you’ve ever been overweight, you know how absolutely ignorant that kind of thinking really is.

I’ve been in practice for over 12 years and I’ve spent a majority of that time in the operating room as a neurophysiologist.  Time and time again I saw patients turned away from a procedure they desperately needed because of their weight.

Simple action can dramatically improve weight loss results

Losing weight for surgery might seem impossible at first.  There is one thing you can do right now to improve your chances for losing weight and feeling better like never before.  And it requires little to no effort or exercise.

That first step always seems to be the hardest.  You have to ask yourself if it’s really worth it.  You have tried and failed so many times before.  What makes this time different?

Losing Weight for Surgery: Why does it matter?

It’s easy to understand why you’re upset.  Your doctor says that you need this surgery to get relief, but in order to have the surgery, you’ll need to meet them halfway and lose at least 20 pounds.

A lot of people have felt this frustration. It may be due to the seeming lack of compassion on the part of the doctor as they wave their hand in the air, tell you to lose weight -as if it’s just that simple- and then walk out of the room.  Clearly there is a gap in communication.  Let’s fill that gap, avoid unnecessary anxiety and set you up for having the best surgical outcome possible.

Whose Fault That I’m Fat?

Research proves it's preventable so blame...

Just a few weeks ago I was debriding and dressing a diabetic wound for a very obese patient.  It had spread from his foot all the way to his knee and this was the first time he was seeking care for it.

It’s a sad scenario because he’s going to have to make some really difficult decisions that will change the whole course of his life.

Kitchen Staples

drjfab's kitchen essentials

Here’s a list of items that I have become fond of. Most of them are for the kitchen and represent efficiency in my busy life. Feel free to use this list as a foundation for starting your own. Clicking the item names will take you to the stores where an example of each item can be viewed or purchased directly. ENJOY!

The items with a (*) are items that I tend to use more than 3x per week. The other items can be purchased over time, or as recipes call for them, to spread out the cost. You should be able to get started for less than $100.
